Shameless Plug

To all my friends in the dance community, I need your help! Here is my IndieGoGo campaign video for my fashion line hennaflower. I am fundraising to relaunch my fashion line at Africa Fashion Week in New York City in July. Any contribution counts, even if it’s a repost on your facebook page, twitter, or blog!

Thanks and love!

New site features!

Hello!

New York Belly Dance Events has now been up and running for about a month! Lately the events have been pouring it, which is just great. I (Dameshe) created this site for my community of musicians and dancers and I am thrilled to see everyone beginning to use it. :)

I noticed the events page was getting a little cluttered so some new features have been added. You can still search through all events by just clicking on the “events” link above, but also, you can view events via categories (dance events, music events, etc), and locations!

Events will now be approved automatically. I was worried about spam, so they once had to be approved by me, but I’m a bit busy so it’s easier and faster if events go up right away. The more the site is used, the less likely there will be spam and I can delete it pretty quickly if it occurs.

I’ve also noticed that some dancers are creating locations pages and listing class or workshop info there. That is fine, but please make sure you are also actually creating an event listing as well or your event wont be visible in the list. Please email me about that if you are confused.

Thanks and enjoy the site!

Welcome!

I (Dameshe) began studying Middle Eastern Dance in 1997.  Around that time, a new website emerged called “bellydanceny“. I loved this site because it listed all the happenings around the city, and as a new dancer, this was VERY exciting. There were tons of events and classes going on at any given time, and there was so much that I could sink my teeth into! It really helped me immerse myself in my newfound love of the dance and for the music. Stella ran the site for a little over a decade, decided to quit at one point, then started it up again a while later, but then gave it up for good.

Now we have facebook, twitter and mailing lists, but honestly, I think it’s easier to keep up with what’s happening by just checking it all out in one place, just like in the old days!

After giving it alot of thought, I decided to start a similar site myself. With wordpress and all of the awesome plugins available, it should (at least I hope) be alot easier to maintain than its predecessor (which I believe was all HTML coded by Stella). Instead of having events sent to me, I have set it up so that you, dancers, and musicians, can upload your own content (events, classes and such), and I will just be here to maintain the site and weed out any bugs or issues. Just visit the “add your own event” page and view it once your done on the “events” page. Just that simple! :)

By the way, the site is still in a “BETA” testing phase, so if you do find anything wonky, or have questions, please email me via the contact page. Also, keep in mind, my little one keeps me kinda busy, but I will get back to you as soon as I can. Enjoy…and special thanks to Stella for keeping us informed for so long! :)
